Identity Spoofing

Identity spoofing, or IP address spoofing, occurs when an attacker determines the IP address of a network, computer, or network component, and uses it to gain access or submit data under that identity, without being authorized to do so.

Defenses

To prevent this type of attack, take precautions at the network level:

  • Ensure there are proper access control lists (ACLs) that implement ingress filtering.

  • Implement authentication and encryption.
